Cotton Statement on the Senate's Failed Cloture Vote to Advance a Continuing Resolution

September 24, 2015
Washington, D.C.- Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) today released the following statement on the Senate's failed cloture vote to advance a continuing resolution:

"I could not support this continuing resolution because it badly underfunds our military, providing even less for defense than President Obama requested. The consequences of ongoing military-budget cuts are immediate and dangerous. Today, our Navy cannot keep an aircraft carrier in the Persian Gulf, our Army and Marine Corps are losing thousands of battle-hardened troops to forced retirement, and our Air Force is flying the oldest and smallest fleet in its history. Put simply, our military is at its breaking point as it attempts to respond to proliferating threats around the world from terrorist groups like ISIS. Not to mention, the President's dangerous nuclear deal with Iran is about to empower the world's leading state sponsor of terrorism with $150 billion. Congress must act now to stop the devastating cuts to our military that are putting our national security at risk.

"As the budget debate advances, I will continue to advocate for our troops and a defense budget necessary to protect our national security. Likewise, I will continue to protect the unborn as I have in the past by voting for the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act and sponsoring the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act."
