Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) today released the following statement on Panama's severing of diplomatic ties with Taiwan in favor of China:
"This is troubling news that shows Beijing is determined to back Taiwan into a corner. The Communist regime's attempts to poach Taiwan's diplomatic partners and isolate Taipei directly threaten the status quo across the Taiwan Strait. This is why it's imperative that we strengthen our ties with Taiwan on multiple levels, and I will be introducing legislation to do just that. In the meantime, the administration should take steps now to bolster Taiwan's standing on the world stage and encourage other nations to reaffirm friendly ties with the people of Taiwan instead of shunning them at an aggressive regime's behest."
