Washington, D.C.- Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) today released the following statement on the Turkish general election:
"I have been deeply concerned about the state of Turkish politics. Governmental restrictions and pressure on media freedom, state interference in anticorruption investigations, and politically motivated violence against opposition parties have been blows to Turkey's democratic traditions. Now that votes have been cast, I would urge the new government to reaffirm its commitment to open political debate, to accountable government, and to free and fair elections. The United States and Turkey are NATO allies committed to our mutual defense, and we share a strong interest in defeating the Islamic State. Strengthening shared values of constitutional government will only serve to further galvanize that ironclad security relationship."
