Washington, D.C.-Senator Tom Cotton (R-Arkansas) today issued the following statement on the Senate's vote on legislation blocking sanctuary cities from receiving certain federal funds:

"Just months ago, Kate Steinle was murdered by an illegal immigrant in broad daylight in San Francisco while her father watched in horror. Kate and numerous other victims like her would still be with us today if local law enforcement had taken appropriate action against her killer and worked with federal authorities to ensure he was deported when they had the chance.

"Today we had an opportunity to honor Kate's memory and pass legislation that would help prevent this kind of senseless tragedy from happening again. Regrettably, Senate Democrats put politics before common-sense efforts to protect public safety and blocked this bill from even coming up for debate. No matter their political affiliation, elected officials should support the rule of law and protect the safety of all Americans."
